# TinyFish

> CURRENT is a journal about AI agents in production, for the engineering and product leaders who have to make them work. Drawing on experience building enterprise web agents, it explains why the demo succeeded and the deployment didn't, and what that means for choosing vendors, briefing the board, and avoiding mistakes others have already made.

## Issue 23 — Foundations

Conceptual clarity earned from building at scale

### Before the Thinning

- [Everything Grows When Nothing Has Failed Yet](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/23/foundations/article/12439/markdown>) — By [Nora Kaplan](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/26/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-01 · Format: Before the Thinning

Ninety-seven million monthly downloads. Every major lab shipping a framework. Thousands of MCP servers, most less than a year old. The landscape maps for AI agents have become so dense they're nearly unreadable. By every surface measure, the ecosystem is thriving.

### Where Winners Emerge

- [The Agent Toolchain Is Consolidating in Four Different Directions at Once](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/23/foundations/article/12440/markdown>) — By [Rina Takahashi](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/25/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-01 · Format: Where Winners Emerge

Playwright has 84,000 GitHub stars and roughly double the adoption of Selenium. By most measures, it won. So why did one of the most prominent AI browser tools just rip it out entirely and rewrite from scratch? Everyone talks about the agent toolchain consolidating. But the layers of the stack are moving at different speeds, in ways that contradict each other. The kind of movement you're watching tells you as much as which tool is ahead.

The sheer count across eleven categories makes proliferation concrete. Useful less as a shopping list than as evidence of how fast category boundaries are blurring.

A close read of what "pre-RFC" actually means for enterprise features like audit trails and SSO-integrated auth. The gaps the protocol's own maintainers acknowledge tell you more than the features they ship.

Browser tooling is where proliferation meets consolidation pressure first. This maps the bifurcation clearly: sites now serve two audiences, and the tooling reflects it.

Puts a number on the deployment gap: 83% of organizations planning agent initiatives, 29% with infrastructure to support them. That spread looks structural, not temporary.

Translates MCP's technical proliferation into the governance and attack-surface language that CIOs are actually using right now. Worth reading for the framing alone.

### The Explosion in Numbers

Occasionally the most honest thing you can do with a fast-moving landscape is stop interpreting and just count what's there.

Every layer of the agent ecosystem has grown in ways that would have sounded implausible twelve months ago. Protocols going from niche to near-universal adoption. Frameworks multiplying until every major lab maintains one. Observability becoming a product category with fifteen entrants. Models clearing benchmarks that were supposed to stay out of reach for a while longer.

Six data points, enough context to feel the weight of each. The numbers do most of the talking.

Tag: Agent Frameworks

LangChain holds 132,000 GitHub stars, but the real signal is elsewhere. OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft, and HuggingFace each maintain their own orchestration SDK now. Over 15 active frameworks competing for how agents get built. A year ago, you could count the serious ones on one hand.

Tag: Protocol Adoption

Anthropic launched the Model Context Protocol in November 2024 at roughly 2 million monthly downloads. Eighteen months later: 97 million downloads, 10,000+ active public servers, every major AI provider on board, and a new home at the Linux Foundation. That growth curve is hard to overstate.

Browser Use posts 89.1% on WebVoyager across 586 web tasks, leading the open-source pack. Ten-plus competing browser agent tools crowd the leaderboard behind it. The distance between open-source and proprietary shrinks with each release cycle.

Tag: Agent Observability

Fifteen-plus dedicated observability platforms now exist for agentic systems. A category that barely had a name two years ago. LangSmith alone processes over 15 billion traces. The tooling covers distributed tracing, cost monitoring, failure-mode detection, and human-in-the-loop approvals.

With 182,000 GitHub stars, 400+ integrations, and native LangChain support, n8n has quietly become the default no-code surface for AI agent workflows. A fair-code license and a 200,000-member community put it among GitHub's top 50 projects overall.

OpenAI's GPT-5.4 scores 75% on OSWorld-Verified, clearing the 72.4% human expert baseline for computer use. It arrives alongside Claude 4.6 Opus, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and NVIDIA Nemotron 3 Super in a March 2026 model wave that fuels everything listed above.

### The Constraints Building

A consistent signal runs through this quarter's data. Across governance, security, infrastructure, and protocol maturity, the agent ecosystem keeps colliding with the same structural reality: building capable agents turned out to be the straightforward part. Operating them is something else entirely.

The numbers below are constraint signals. They mark the forces that will thin what's being built, separating what ships from what survives production. Some point to engineering problems with tractable paths forward. Others point to gaps that don't have owners yet, or even names.

What connects them: the next phase of this ecosystem will be shaped less by who builds the most agents and more by who figures out how to run them.

Tag: Governance Gap

HiddenLayer's 2026 survey of 250 IT and security leaders surfaces a 54-point gap between agentic AI ambition and operational readiness. Deloitte's data tells the same story from a different angle: ~70% piloting, ~30% prepared. That gap is where pilots go to stall.

Tag: Protocol Gaps

The 2026 MCP roadmap names enterprise auth, audit trails, gateway behavior, and configuration portability as unresolved. A dedicated enterprise working group doesn't exist yet. At 97 million monthly downloads, these are production pain points, not theoretical shortfalls.

Tag: Security Surface

HiddenLayer reports autonomous agents now drive more than one in eight AI-related breaches. Meanwhile, 5,800+ community-built MCP servers expand the attack surface with minimal gatekeeping. Worse: 31% of organizations can't say whether they've been breached at all. You can't govern what you can't see.

NVIDIA and Nutanix both announced infrastructure plays in March 2026, framing the constraint identically: the hard part is no longer building the model but managing infrastructure to securely run thousands of agents at scale. When hardware and platform vendors land on the same talking point independently, pay attention.

Tag: Reliability Signal

Fortune Business Insights values the automation testing market at $24.25 billion in 2026, projecting $84 billion by 2034. Services account for 55% of the total, which tells you something: reliability requires sustained operational investment, not a one-time tooling purchase.
