# TinyFish

> CURRENT is a journal about AI agents in production, for the engineering and product leaders who have to make them work. Drawing on experience building enterprise web agents, it explains why the demo succeeded and the deployment didn't, and what that means for choosing vendors, briefing the board, and avoiding mistakes others have already made.

## Issue 26 — Market Pulse

Reading the agent ecosystem through a practitioner's lens

### The Control Plane

- [The Governance Layer Land Grab](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/26/market-pulse/article/13646/markdown>) — By [Rina Takahashi](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/25/markdown>) · Published 2026-04-22 · Format: The Control Plane

In a three-week stretch, Google, Cloudflare, Salesforce, Databricks, Snowflake, and Microsoft each announced an agent governance platform. Every one of them called it a "centralized control plane." Six centralized control planes is, of course, zero centralized control planes. But the timing is the tell.

### Six Claims, Six Layers

Six platforms shipped control plane claims in a single week. Nobody coordinated this. Which makes the convergence more interesting.

Google consolidated from the model layer up. Cloudflare staked out infrastructure from the network down. Salesforce tore the GUI off its own product. Databricks and Snowflake extended their data governance models outward. Microsoft planted a flag in commerce. Different starting positions, identical vocabulary.

Notice that MCP shows up in every single announcement. And every platform reaches for the same word, "governance," to describe what is ultimately a land grab. The layer you govern is the layer you own.

Cloud Next '26 rebranded Vertex AI as the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Agent Registry, Agent Identity, Agent Gateway, Agent Observability, all consolidated. Six trillion tokens processed monthly. Pichai's framing says it plainly: the problem has moved from building agents to managing thousands of them.

- **Cloudflare Stakes Its Claim as Agentic Cloud** — [Source](<https://blog.cloudflare.com/agents-week-in-review/>) — Published 2026-04-22

Tag: Infrastructure Layer

Agents Week delivered Browser Run, persistent Sandboxes, and Shadow MCP detection. The number underneath: agentic actors now account for roughly 10% of Cloudflare's network requests, up 60% year-over-year. At that volume, per-container pricing collapses. Cloudflare wants the primitives cheaper and closer to the edge.

Tag: Application Layer

Headless 360 exposes every Salesforce capability as an API, MCP tool, or CLI command. Sixty-plus new MCP tools shipped immediately. Salesforce called it the most ambitious architectural shift in 27 years. Parker Harris's provocation landed: "Why should you ever log into Salesforce again?"

- **Databricks Stretches Unity Catalog to Cover Agents** — [Source](<https://www.databricks.com/blog/ai-gateway-governance-layer-agentic-ai>) — Published 2026-04-22

Tag: Data Governance

AI Gateway becomes Unity AI Gateway, wrapping Unity Catalog's permissions, auditing, and policy controls around how agents reach LLMs and MCP servers. The telling design choice: on-behalf-of access means agents inherit the requesting user's exact permissions. No shared service accounts. No privilege escalation by default.

Tag: Analytics Control

Cortex Code gained MCP and ACP integrations, external data system support, and multi-step reasoning for complex analysis. Over 9,100 customers use Snowflake's AI products weekly. The positioning is unusually blunt: centralized governance over how organizations orchestrate data, models, and enterprise applications.

Tag: Commerce Layer

Universal Commerce Protocol support in Merchant Center, plus Copilot Checkout enhancements, stake out the transaction layer. The scale signal is hard to ignore: agentic browser traffic has surged roughly 8,000% year-over-year, per HUMAN Security data. Automated traffic is growing at eight times the rate of human traffic.

### Research Signals

- **TrajAD: Trajectory Anomaly Detection for Trustworthy LLM Agents** — [Source](<https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.06443>) — Published 2026-04-22

A fine-tuned 4B-parameter model detects and pinpoints errors in agent execution traces at runtime, enabling rollback-and-retry. General-purpose LLMs scored below 10% on precise error localization. Dedicated trajectory auditing tooling outperformed them by 48%. Bigger models aren't the answer here.

Why does size fail here? Frontier LLMs can't reliably locate errors inside agent trajectories. A purpose-built 4B model beats them handily, suggesting auditing is its own discipline.

Who sees the traces first? Trajectory-level auditing lives naturally in the observability layer. That makes it a control plane function, not a debugging convenience.

- **Ontology-Constrained Neural Reasoning in Enterprise Agentic Systems** — [Source](<https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.00555>) — Published 2026-04-22

Formal ontologies embedded directly into LLM agent reasoning, tested across 600 runs in five regulated industries. An "inverse parametric knowledge effect" emerged: ontological grounding helped most in domains where frontier model training data was thinnest. Output-side validation remains unsolved.

Where does grounding matter most? Exactly where models know the least. Compliance and role consistency gains were largest in data-sparse regulated domains.

Can governance live inside reasoning? If ontological constraints shape agent decisions before they execute, external enforcement becomes a backstop rather than the whole story.

- **Stanford AI Index 2026: The Jagged Frontier** — [Source](<https://hai.stanford.edu/news/inside-the-ai-index-12-takeaways-from-the-2026-report>) — Published 2026-04-22

Agent task success on Terminal-Bench jumped from 20% to 77.3%. The same models that win math olympiads read analog clocks correctly 50.1% of the time. Documented AI incidents hit 362. Benchmarks saturate in months. Failure modes remain jagged and poorly mapped.

How jagged is the frontier? Models that dominate competition-level math perform at coin-flip accuracy on analog clocks. Competence boundaries are invisible from inside the system.

What does governance assume? That we can characterize where systems fail. The jagged frontier suggests those failure boundaries shift faster than any framework can track.

- **Don't Retrieve, Navigate: Distilling Enterprise Knowledge into Navigable Agent Skills** — [Source](<https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.14572>) — Published 2026-04-22

Replaces passive RAG retrieval with an offline-compiled hierarchical skill directory that agents actively navigate, backtrack through, and reason across. The structural shift turns knowledge access into a curated artifact. Whoever builds and maintains the hierarchy shapes what agents can know.

What changes when agents navigate instead of retrieve? They get a bird's-eye view of the knowledge corpus and choose where to look, rather than consuming search results passively.

Who controls the skill registry? The knowledge hierarchy is a designed artifact with editorial authority. Ownership of it is a governance decision hiding in plain sight.

### The Headless Turn

- [Salesforce Tells Its Users to Stop Logging In. That's the Point.](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/26/market-pulse/article/13658/markdown>) — Published 2026-04-22

Parker Harris posed the question before TDX: "Why should you ever log into Salesforce again?" He wasn't being provocative. He was describing the roadmap.
