## Issue 51 — Echoes

Past infrastructure decisions echoing in today's production realities

### Convention Under Load

- [What robots.txt Was Never Asked to Carry](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/45727/markdown>) — By [Sable Whitford](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/201/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-16 · Format: Historical Parallels

In 1994, a web engineer proposed a two-field text file so site operators could ask crawlers to stay out of certain directories. It worked because everyone involved chose to go along with it. Thirty years later, publishers and regulators are trying to make that same file express commercial licensing terms, AI training restrictions, and limits on what agents can do. The convention hasn't failed. It's being asked to do work that needs identity, authorization, payment, and enforcement, none of which anybody built when the web was young, and the clearest view we have of those missing pieces is where the old file cracks.

### Automation Surprise

- [The Machine Did What It Was Built to Do, and People Were Still Surprised](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/45703/markdown>) — By [Sevda Polat](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/200/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-16

In 1989, a NASA researcher named Earl Wiener asked pilots about new airplanes in which computers did much of the flying. The questions the pilots kept asking were strikingly plain. *What is it doing now? Why did it do that? What will it do next?*

### The Cue Book

- [Don't Delete Someone Else's Fear](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/45712/markdown>) — Published 2026-10-16

*Marisol Ochoa is a composite, a fictional stage manager assembled from the real conventions of a profession that has been refining its delegation protocols since gaslights and trapdoors. The operas she references are real. The mistakes she describes have all happened, to someone. Her prompt book, which she will not let you touch, follows every convention of the trade.*

### After Adoption

- [The Six Thousand Rules](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/45844/markdown>) — By [Sable Whitford](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/201/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-16 · Format: After Adoption

DEC's expert system for configuring VAX orders worked: fewer than one misconfiguration per thousand. By 1987 it had 6,200 rules, half of them changing every year, and developers were copying rules whose rationale nobody remembered. A redesign effort couldn't outrun the growth. Agent deployments that succeed will pile up the same inventory of prompts, workarounds, and exception lists. The companion piece traces what's growing in the other direction.

- [Adopted but Unused, Used but Unadopted](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/45845/markdown>) — By [Sable Whitford](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/201/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-16 · Format: After Adoption

A Census Bureau survey of 117,000 businesses found AI adoption and AI use don't always travel together. Some firms formally adopted AI that workers aren't using. Some workers are using AI nobody approved. And 64% of AI-using firms reported making no institutional adjustments at all. Agent governance will have to handle both: maintaining what was formally built, and finding what grew on its own.

The first time an application has to coordinate work across two systems, the ACID guarantee hits a wall. Two-phase commit tried to push it across the network and buckled under real conditions. Sagas replaced it with something weaker and more honest: not rollback but compensation, new actions that approximate an undo without erasing anything. Agents inherit that world, calling APIs across boundaries that share no transaction manager.

- [All or Nothing](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/41587/markdown>) — By [Sable Whitford](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/201/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-08 · Format: Inside and Across Boundaries

For decades, database transactions gave engineers a reliable deal: write the logic, trust the commit, and if something fails, the system handles it. The ACID contract, named in 1983 and built toward for a decade before that, made half-done impossible inside a single system. Reservations, payroll, accounting all sit on top of it. Then the boundary moved.

- [What Compensation Actually Meant](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/41586/markdown>) — By [Sable Whitford](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/201/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-08 · Format: Historical Parallels

In 1987, two researchers wrote down something database operators already lived with: an operation that spans multiple systems can't hold everything still until it finishes. Their answer, the saga, came with a condition attached. Before any step was allowed to commit, the system had to already know how to walk that step back. Compensation was the price of decomposing a transaction into independent pieces, and you paid it up front. Nearly four decades later, agents run multi-step operations across services they don't control, with all of the flexibility and none of the condition.

- [The Same Absence, Learned](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/issue/51/echoes/article/40512/markdown>) — By [Sevda Polat](<https://current.tinyfish.ai/team/200/markdown>) · Published 2026-10-01 · Format: Two Eras of Guessing

Vision models can now read a screenshot and try to work out which elements are clickable, what a button does, where to type. It is the task screen readers faced for decades, attempted with unrecognizably different machinery. On real desktop work, success rates sit near 5%, and when these models miss, there is no rule to open and no set of conditions to enumerate.
